Boats often need to carry additional equipment such as dinghies, tenders, life rafts, or other small watercraft. Safely lifting and storing this equipment can be challenging without the right system. Davits provide a practical solution by allowing boat owners to lift, lower, and secure equipment with greater convenience while making efficient use of available space.
What Are Davits?
Davits are lifting systems installed on boats to handle smaller vessels and other equipment. They typically use arms, supports, lines, winches, or mechanical lifting components to raise and lower a load.
Depending on the boat and intended application, davits can be mounted at the stern, on a swim platform, or in another suitable location. Their design and capacity vary considerably, so selecting a system that matches the vessel and load is essential.
Common Uses of Davits
One of the most common applications for davits is carrying a dinghy or tender. Instead of towing a small boat continuously, owners can lift it out of the water and secure it at the stern when it is not being used.
Davits can also be used for lifting life rafts, small watercraft, and certain pieces of marine equipment. This can help keep decks and other areas clear while providing convenient access to frequently used equipment.
Benefits of Using Davits
Davits can make handling a tender or other equipment considerably easier. They provide a controlled lifting method and can reduce the physical effort required to move heavy or awkward loads.
Another advantage is improved space management. Raising a dinghy out of the water can free valuable deck space and reduce the need for additional towing arrangements. For cruising boats, this can make the overall setup more organized and practical.
Different Types of Davits
There are several types of davit systems available for different boat configurations. Fixed davits provide a permanent lifting solution, while folding or removable models can offer greater flexibility when space is limited.
Some systems use manual lifting arrangements, while others can be combined with electric or powered winches for easier operation. The appropriate choice depends on the vessel’s size, available mounting space, load requirements, and frequency of use.
Important Safety Considerations
Safety should always be a priority when using davits. The system must have a suitable load capacity for the equipment being lifted. The weight of the dinghy, engine, fuel, and additional gear should all be considered when determining the total load.
Mounting points must also be strong enough to handle the forces generated during lifting and while the boat is moving. Installation should follow the manufacturer’s instructions and, where necessary, be carried out or inspected by a qualified marine professional.
Loads should be secured properly before the boat begins underway operations. Regular inspection of cables, straps, hinges, attachment points, and lifting mechanisms can help identify wear before it becomes a safety concern.
Choosing the Right Davits
When selecting Davits, boat owners should consider the vessel’s design, available mounting area, maximum load, dinghy dimensions, and preferred lifting method. Corrosion-resistant materials can be particularly useful in marine environments where equipment is exposed to saltwater and moisture.
A properly matched davit system should provide reliable lifting performance without interfering with other equipment or restricting access to important areas of the boat.
Conclusion
Davits are valuable marine accessories for safely lifting, transporting, and storing dinghies, tenders, and other equipment. With the right design, capacity, installation, and maintenance, they can improve convenience while helping boat owners make better use of limited space. Selecting a durable davit system that matches the vessel and intended load can support practical and reliable operation during boating adventures.
